The fishing ban in the Xijiang River ends!

The four-month fishing ban along the Xijiang River ended at midnight on June 30th. Starting from midnight on July 1st, fishermen along the Xijiang River in Yunfu City set sail one after another, commencing a new round of fishing.

In the early morning of July 1st, after the fishing opening ceremony, nearly 40 fishing boats from Shangkeng Village, Yun'an District, set sail one after another. Fishermen were busy on the river, casting nets, hauling in catches, and weighing them, bringing the Xijiang River back to life after a four-month rest.

Fisherman Li Jinrong started preparing his fishing gear at 4:00 AM, placing fish traps in suitable areas along the river. In less than half a day, he had a bountiful catch. "Today's catch is quite good. We caught Xijiang River shrimp, bighead carp, and white amur bream, among others. There are various sizes, with some weighing around 12 kilograms and others about six to seven kilograms."

On the same day, fisherman Li Shuijin caught a notable 19.9-kilogram bighead carp with his first haul of the fishing season. "This one was caught in Shangkeng Village. The fish now are exceptionally plump and delicious."

The Xijiang River stretches for 118 kilometers within Yunfu, with clear waters and deep currents, boasting abundant fisheries resources. Species such as grass carp, perch,Japanese grenadier anchovy, white amur bream, silver carp, and Xijiang River shrimp are renowned as "Xijiang River delicacies." As soon as the fresh and plump Xijiang River delicacies are brought ashore, they attract many residents and businesses to purchase them.

Among them, a local food company has adopted an innovative model of "develop enterprises to promote agriculture", where it directly purchases Xijiang River fish caught by fishermen to help them increase their income. "We have established processing plants along the Xijiang River to purchase and process the fish caught by fishermen into dried fish, which not only solves the sales issues for fishermen but also promotes our brand of Yunfu dried Xijiang River fish." said Huang Zhenming, Chairman of Yunfu Dajiang Food Co., Ltd.

It is reported that since 2011, Yunfu has implemented a 14-year consecutive ban on fishing in the Xijiang River. The fishing ban area includes the main and tributary streams of the Xijiang River under Yunfu's jurisdiction. After years of implementing the fishing ban, significant increases have been observed in economically important species such as blank amur bream, white amur bream, and mud carp. Biodiversity has been protected, and aquatic ecosystems have been restored as a result.
